The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating cribs from different makers to determine if drop-side cribs should be taken off the market due to safety concerns. Many parents use drop-side cribs because the side lowers, and they can more easily access their children. However, the sliding mechanism has been known to malfunction, causing strangulation. Since 2001, 32 children have died as a result of malfunctioning drop-side cribs.
Several companies, like Graco Cribs and C&T International, have recalled several models of their drop-side cribs, bringing the total to seven recalls in the past five years. The Consumer Product Safety Commission encourages parents who use drop-side cribs to find another place for their children to sleep until the situation has been settled.
