Study shows cost of traumatic brain injury in Texas

Posted on September 3rd, 2010 No Comments

According to a study completed by CORE Health Foundation, traumatic brain injury, or TBI, accounts for approximately $6.8 billion a year in Texas.  ”While this estimate appears large , it is at the low end of the range of costs expected to occur from TBIs in Texas every year,” stated co-founder and trustee of CORE Health and former president of Brain Injury Association of Texas Eric Makowski.

Furthermore, 15.7 percent of TBIs in Texas resulted in productivity loss- 14 times greater than the productivity loss seen from spinal cord injuries.  The study also shows that approximately 119,500 emergency room visits are made in Texas a year for TBI, 22,000 hospital visits are made, almost half of TBIs in Texas resulted in long-term or permanent disabilities.

The leading causes of TBI are falls, at 35 percent, and traffic accidents, at 17 percent.  Gunshot wounds, sports and workplace injuries, domestic violence, child abuse, and military involvement also account for many traumatic brain injuries.

Stadium light posts recalled for risk of falling

Posted on July 14th, 2010 No Comments

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recently recalled over 2,500 outdoor stadium light poles manufactured by Whitco Co. for fear of them falling.  Investigators have confirmed 11 instances of the poles falling.   Once, a pole fell through the roof of a school gymnasium, and in two other instances light posts fell onto stadium bleachers.  Fortunately, nobody has been injured by one of the poles so far.  50 other poles were found to have cracks in the weld that connects the pole to its base.  Majority of the poles are located in Texas.

Whitco Co. manufactured the recalled poles between the years 2000 and 2005.   Each pole is over 70 feet tall and weighs between one and four tons.  The light poles are made of steel and have a galvanized coating.

Kellogg’s issues voluntary food recall

Posted on July 7th, 2010 No Comments

June 29th Kellogg’s Company issued a voluntary food recall of several of its cereals under the advisement of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  Boxes of Kellogg’s Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Froot Loops, and Honey Smacks were removed from shelves after complaints of an uncharacteristic smell and taste.

Kellogg’s believes the risk associated with eating any of these products is very small, however they advise consumers to not eat boxes of any of the aforementioned cereals purchased before the 29th.

Foster’s Food Fair IGA stated, “Until further correspondence from the manufacturer on this affected product, moving forward, it will not be available”.

Medical over-treatment not entirely uncommon

Posted on June 9th, 2010 No Comments

Checking up on America’s medical care industry, an Associated Press report has concluded that Americans endanger themselves by engaging in too many medical treatments and tests.

According to their findings, anywhere from one-fifth to one-third of all medical solutions, either tests or treatments, that require a doctor’s intervention are unnecessary procedures. In many cases, there is no better cure than time or rest.

Back-related treatments are usually cited as the most unnecessary. Nearly one-third of all Medicare patients as receiving a scan for back pain did not wait the standard six months of lingering aches, instead receiving the scan after about one month.

The results of this over-treatment can prove to be very dangerous. Not only is money wasted in the process, but side-effects from scans, treatments, or drugs used to facilitate the process can leave patients with any number of complications. In the case of spinal surgeries to cure back pain, some can be unnecessary procedures taken up for the sake of a faster healing result. In the long-term, however, future surgeries are used to fix the damage caused by the initial surgery, propelling the patient through a series of operations.

If you or someone you love has undergone a treatment that was unnecessary and left behind nothing but expenses and suffering, contact the Waco medical malpractice attorneys at the Law Offices of Vic Feazell, P.C., by calling 877-948-4842 today.
