Posted on September 14th, 2011 No Comments

A recent truck accident in East Texas is believed to have been caused by truck driver negligence.  The accident occurred near Mineola last week when a truck driver ran a red light.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials reported that the tanker truck was driving eastbound on Highway 69 when a car with a green light hit the truck.  The car was coming from northbound Loop 564.

The car struck the tanker truck’s fuel tanks which caused them to catch fire.  The truck continued traveling down the highway before coming to a stop off the south side of the road.

Paramedics took the car’s 65-year old driver to Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas for treatment of unspecified injuries .  The truck driver was also injured in the accident and was treated at East Texas Medical Center Hospital.

New law protects student athletes with concussions

Posted on September 8th, 2011 No Comments

A new law in Texas called “Natasha’s Law” aims at protecting student athletes from concussions and other serious brain injuries.  Statistics show that about 67,000 high school athletes suffer concussions playing sports for their school every year.

The law requires coaches and other officials to have student athletes who have suffered a concussion to sit out of practices and games for at least 1 day.  Under “Natasha’s Law,” student athletes with concussions are not allowed to return to practicing or competing until they have received a physician’s approval.

The law is named after Natasha Helmick — a high school soccer player who suffered her first concussion when she was 14.  Helmick says she could only see out of one eye after getting hit in the head, but returned to play in the game because she wanted to help her team and “was thinking in the heat of the moment … and that is just how athletes think.”  She continues to suffer from headaches and has difficulty concentrating after having a total of 4 concussions.

FAA study says pilots are losing the ability to fly

Posted on August 31st, 2011 No Comments

The Federal Aviation Administration recently released a study that says that automated flight systems are causing pilots to lose their ability to fly.

The study used data from 9,000 flights, 46 serious airplane accidents, and 734 reports from pilots.  In analyzing this data, FAA officials found that more than 60 percent of plane crashes involved a pilot’s inability to manually operate the plane or an error made using the automated system.

The most common problems involved pilots failing to recognize that an automated system had failed or a pilot’s inability to recover from an automated system problem.

The FAA suggests that there needs to be more opportunities for pilots to practice manually operating an aircraft.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a plane crash caused by pilot error, contact the Waco pilot error lawyers of The Law Offices of Vic Feazell, P.C. at 877-948-4842 to set up an appointment to speak with one of our attorneys.

The driver, traveling in a maroon Chevrolet or GMC pickup truck, was reported to have failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign when he struck the 37- and 36-year old motorcyclists.  The accident occurred at the intersection of Loop 335 and Tradewind Street at around 9:30 p.m.

The pickup continued driving after hitting the motorcyclists.  Both motorcyclists were taken to Northwest Texas Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.  One of the motorcyclists later passed away at the hospital.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims’ family and friends after this devastating accident.

Workers trapped in elevator that filled with water

Posted on August 17th, 2011 No Comments

Over the weekend, 2 construction workers working in New York became trapped in an elevator that filled with water.

Shortly after getting on the elevator, the 2 men realized that the elevator’s doors would not open.  The workers pushed the buttons for several floors hoping that the doors would open when it stopped at one of the floors.

On the basement level, the elevator stopped and began to fill with water, pushing the elevator to the bottom of the shaft.  The building the men were working at had experienced flooding due to heavy rainfall on Sunday.

The men called for help and firefighters arrived at the building to rescue them about an hour later.  By this time, the water was only 3 feet from the elevator’s ceiling.  Then men stood on a plastic cart they were using to carry supplies and the water still reached up to their necks.

Fortunately, the men were able to escape unharmed with the help of the firefighters.

Elevators can malfunction in a variety of different ways and cause accidents that can cause serious injury or even death.  If you or someone you love has been injured in an elevator or escalator accident, contact the Waco elevator & escalator injuries lawyers of The Law Offices of Vic Feazell, P.C. at 877-948-4842 to learn more about how we can help you.

Dodge recalls 240,000 Dodge Ram pickup trucks

Posted on July 13th, 2011 No Comments

Today, Dodge issued a recall of more than 240,000 Dodge Ram pickup trucks sold in the United States between 2003 and 2011.  The recall includes 1500, 2500, and 3500 model Dodge Rams.

The recall was issued after officials realized that the vehicles’ left front steering assemblies have a tendency to break.  The defect increases drivers’ chances of being in a low-speed accident.

Officials say the left tie rod ball stud is most likely to break when performing high-stress maneuvers at a low speed.  If the stud breaks, the vehicles’ left front wheel suffers a loss in directional stability.

If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident caused by a recalled or defective vehicle, contact the Waco defective vehicle lawyers of The Law Offices of Vic Feazell, P.C. at 877-948-4842 to learn more about your rights.
