A 21-year old college student and paraplegic spinal cord injury victim recently had the world’s first embryonic stem cell therapy for spinal cord injuries. The young man became partially paralyzed after being involved in a car accident on his way home from the University of Alabama last September.
The nursing student said of his injury, “I realized I couldn’t feel from about here down .. When I got to the hospital, they said I would never walk again.”
Hopeful for any kind of cure for his paralysis, the 21-year old agreed to be the first person to undergo the stem cell therapy. Doctors injected the man’s spinal cord with about 2 million stem cells. If the therapy is successful, the cells will transform into new nerve cells and restore the student’s central nervous system.
