Fatal day care fire leads to criminal charges
Posted on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011 at 4:01 pm
The owner of a day care where four children were killed in a tragic fire is facing charges of reckless injury to a child and child endangerment. The Houston day care caught fire last Thursday and left three children injured.
Investigators looked into the fire and found that it was caused by a stove’s burner. In addition, surveillance videos at a nearby Target showed the day care’s owner, Jessica Tata, at the store at the time of the fire. Police believe that she left the childcare facility to go to Target when the fire started. The children were left alone.
Police are looking for Tata who is reported to have fled the country to Nigeria.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ family and friends.
Texas produce recalled for possible salmonella contamination
Posted on Wednesday, December 29th, 2010 at 7:40 pm
After recent salmonella contamination recalls in Detroit and Quebec, J&D Produce Inc. of Edinburg, Texas decided to issue a voluntary recall of several of their products. The two primary products being recalled include their Little Bear cilantro and curly parsley produced on November 30th and December 6th.
Officials from J&D say that there have been no reports of salmonella contamination from the recalled products but are merely being cautious after several other producers have recently had to issue product recalls. In addition to the cilantro and curly parsley, J&D also recalled several products produced on the same date and under the Little Bear label for possible cross contamination. The other products include: plain parlsey, dill, mint, beets, turnips, turnip greens, red swiss chard, green swiss chard, rainbow swiss chard, daikon, methileaf, kohlrabi, kale, curly mustard, gold beet, collards, leeks and arugula.

38,000 bottles of Lipitor recalled
Posted on Monday, November 1st, 2010 at 1:29 pm
Pfizer recently issued its second Lipitor recall of the year after consumer complaints that there was an uncharacteristic scent coming from the product’s bottles. Lipitor is a drug used to fight high cholesterol.
The current recall involves 38,000 bottles of 40 mg Lipitor. This is the third recall the company has issued since August for its Lipitor product for its unusual odor. Researchers have looked into what is causing the odor and believe trace amounts of a chemical used to preserve wood is most likely to blame. The chemical is often used on the wooden pallets used in the transportation and storage of products.
Pfizer stated that they do not allow their products to be exposed to the chemical and believe a third party packager may be to blame.

Similac powder baby formula recalled
Posted on Tuesday, September 28th, 2010 at 3:53 pm
Last week, 5 million containers of Similac-brand baby formula were recalled by producer Abbott Laboratories. Executives at Abbott issued the recall voluntarily after workers discovered the presence of small bugs in an area of their Michigan manufacturing plant.
The defective product is Similac’s powder-based baby formula sold in 8 ounce, 12.4 ounce and 12.9 ounce plastic containers. The product could contain small beetles or larvae and could cause stomachache or other digestion problems.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigated the product and plant and determined that the product posed no “immediate health risk”.

USDA recalls one million pounds of ground beef

The USDA has announced the recall of around one million pounds of the California-based Valley Meat Company ground beef after complaints of the product containing the E. coli bacteria.
The recalled products are mostly Valley Meat Company’s frozen ground beef patties produced between October 2009 and January 2010. The USDA and Valley Meat Company warns grocery stores and consumers that they could still have the product because it is frozen.
Seven cases of E. coli poisoning have been reported to Valley Meat Company so far. E. coli can be fatal to children, the elderly, and people with other health problems.
