Two workers die of injuries sustained in workplace explosion

Posted on Wednesday, April 18th, 2012 at 8:12 pm

The second of two workers who suffered serious burns in a waste water treatment plant explosion, has died of injuries sustained in the fire.

The explosion occurred in the compressor room of a Struthers waste water treatment plant on March 1. Both workers were maintenance men at the plant and were working with the wiring in the room as it sparked and, because of a buildup of methane gas in the room, erupted into flames.

Ohio officials are currently investigating what caused the methane to collect. Both men were taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh in order to be treated. One man, the assistant maintenance man was pronounced dead on March 29 and the second man, the lead maintenance member, died on Monday.

Dallas woman killed in home fire

A 48 year-old woman trapped inside of a converted garage in southeast Dallas died late last week when the house became engulfed in flames. A neighbor says he heard her screams and tried to save her, but was unable to break through the garage door.

Firefighters arrived soon after but entered through the front door. By the time they reached the garage, it was too late. Three other people who live in the house were able to escape without injury.

Dallas Fire-Rescue investigators say the fire started inside of the converted garage but do not know at this time how it started.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the woman’s friends and family.

4 injured in restaurant fire started by dessert

Posted on Monday, June 13th, 2011 at 9:07 pm

4 people were recently injured in a fire at a restaurant in Palm Harbor, Florida when the tableside preparation of an order of bananas foster went wrong.  The accident occurred this past Saturday evening at Ozona Blue Grill.

According to fire officials, the fire was started during the dessert preparation when the 28-year old waiter brought a bottle of 151-proof alcohol too close to the flaming dish.  Bananas foster is prepared by pouring liquor over the dessert and lighting it on fire.

The flames from the dessert most likely caught the liquor inside of the bottle on fire.  The waiter lost control of his hold on the bottle after it caught fire and spilled some of its flaming contents onto the restaurant patrons.

A 25-year old woman at the table suffered first, second, and third degree burns.  She was taken to Tampa General Hospital in a helicopter for treatment of the burn injuries.  Two men at the table were reported to have suffered minor burn injuries and another woman had respiratory burns.

6 dead, 3 injured in tragic vacation home fire

Posted on Wednesday, March 30th, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Earlier this month, 6 people were killed and 3 were injured in a fire at a vacation home at Lake Granbury, 65 miles southwest of Dallas.  The home’s owner was away and his children were staying at the vacation home with friends and neighbors.  6 people between the ages of 16 and 30-years old were killed in the fire.

Investigators say that they have been able to determine where the fire started but are still unsure of the cause.  They do not believe any criminal activity is to blame.

Firefighters arrived at the scene of the fire at around 6:10 A.M. and found 3 people outside of the vacation home with burn and smoke inhalation injuries.  It took firefighters over an hour to extinguish the blaze.

Our thoughts and prayers are with victims’ family and friend after this tragic accident.
