Posted on Tuesday, May 24th, 2011 at 9:13 pm

Earlier this month, a Waco woman was injured after a truck ran a red light and struck her vehicle.

According to Waco police officers, the accident happened at the intersection of Richland Drive and Sanger Avenue at around 8:30 on a Friday evening.  A Dodge Ram 1500 was traveling westbound on Sanger when the truck’s driver ran a red light and crashed into the side of the woman’s sedan as she was heading northbound on Richland.

East Texas Medical Center paramedics pulled the woman out of her car and transported her to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Texting while driving bans considered in House

The State House of Representatives has a number of bills to consider that place restrictions on, or ban, texting and driving.  Last week, the House Transportation Committee heard overviews of the bills and heartfelt testimonies from supporters of texting while driving legislation.

Democrats and Republicans in the House are committed to passing one of the texting while driving bills during this legislative session.  Representative Jose Menendez, D-San Antonio, created one bill that would completely ban cell phone use while on the road.  Menendez says that his bill is unique in that it would allow police officers to not have to distinguish between drivers simply holding a cell phone or texting.  Menendez’s bill would allow drivers to use cell phones if they are using a hands-free device or need to call 9-1-1.

Representative Tom Craddick, R-Midland, also created a bill concerning texting while driving.  Craddick’s bill proposes fining drivers caught texting and driving $200 for their first offense.  The bill specifies that it would be illegal for drivers to send or receive text messages or emails while on the road.
