Accidental child fatalities on the decline

Posted on Thursday, May 3rd, 2012 at 4:54 pm

A report from the Centers for Disease Control shows that accidental deaths from injuries in children have been on the decline. The death rate for children from accidental injuries dropped almost 30 percent between the years 2000 and 2009.

Stephanie Alvey, the program coordinator at the Heart of Texas Regional Advisory Council attributes this decline in accidental deaths to increased parental awareness of all the dangers children may face on a daily basis.

Despite the decline in deaths from accidental injury, more and more children are losing their lives to poisoning and suffocation.

UTHealth studies treatment for TBI in children

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston recently began enrollment in a new study that will examine the use of cord blood stem cells to treat traumatic brain injuries in children.  UTHealth will be conducting the study at the Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.  The study is open to 10 children between the ages of 18 months and 17 years.  In addition, children in the study must have suffered a traumatic brain injury within 6 to 18 months of enrolling and have saved cord blood with the Cord Blood Registry.

Heather Brown, Vice President of Scientific and Medical Affairs for CBR, stated, “This study is at the forefront of research evaluating a child’s own cord blood stem cells’ ability to help facilitate the healing process after damage to nerve tissue in the brain”.
