The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recently recalled over 2,500 outdoor stadium light poles manufactured by Whitco Co. for fear of them falling. Investigators have confirmed 11 instances of the poles falling. Once, a pole fell through the roof of a school gymnasium, and in two other instances light posts fell onto stadium bleachers. Fortunately, nobody has been injured by one of the poles so far. 50 other poles were found to have cracks in the weld that connects the pole to its base. Majority of the poles are located in Texas.
Whitco Co. manufactured the recalled poles between the years 2000 and 2005. Each pole is over 70 feet tall and weighs between one and four tons. The light poles are made of steel and have a galvanized coating.
